June 20 - According to the Naval Observatory, summer begins at 7:57 pm on a June 20th for the first time since the year 1896. Since that time the summer solstice has always occurred on the 21st or 22nd, but due to a variety of reasons including the gradual slowing of the Earth's rotation, we will begin to experience these "early" solstices more frequently.

June 28 - Scene in Winston-Salem, the first ever downtown scavenger hunt, will be held this day from 2 - 6 p.m. Teams of two will solve clues that will lead them to various downtown destinations, and ultimately to the finish line and the awarding of cash prizes for top finishers.

July 4 - The West End Association holds its annual July 4 neighborhood picnic in Downtown Park, on West End Boulevard behind Crystal Towers, at noon. Potlluck, kids parade, beverages provided. For neighbors and their guests only.

All Summer - The Downtown Farmers Market is now open every Tuesday and Thursday from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. behind the City Market Building at the corner of Cherry and Sixth streets. Produce, crafts, baked goods and flowers are available from local and regional vendors.
